Hofstra University's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa inducted 40 students on May 2, 2018. Phi Beta Kappa is considered an emblem of high achievement and strong potential. The society celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Its campus chapters invite for induction the most outstanding arts and sciences students at America's leading colleges and universities.

About 2,000 Hofstra University students earned their undergraduate, graduate, or law degrees during commencement ceremonies on May 20-21, 2018 at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Watch videos or check out photos from the various ceremonies at hofstra.edu/commencement.

The spectacular work of the Hofstra student-athletes in the classroom continued during the spring semester as not only did the group of more than 300 Pride athletes compile a school-record 3.27 grade point average but 116 of them were named to either the Provost's or Dean's List for their extraordinary work.

The Philosophy Department inducted 19 students into Phi Sigma Tau, the philosophy student honor society and held its annual Philosophy Student Conference. Philosophy students at all levels of study made presentations.

Tia Di Salvo, a junior public relations major in the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, was awarded a 2018 New York Women in Communications, Inc. scholarship, which was given on the basis of academic excellence, leadership qualities, need, and a demonstrated commitment to the communication industry.

Jessica Kurtz, a junior at Hofstra University, has been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship to study Swahili in Arusha, Tanzania, in eastern Africa from June 7 to August 8, 2018. She is from Boyertown, PA, and has double majors in English and education and a minor in speech-language-hearing sciences. The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program is part of a government effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages. CLS scholars gain language and cultural skills that enable them to contribute to U.S. economic competitiveness and national security.

Philosophy major Casey Grippo, Class of 2018, a Provost's List scholar and consistent Dean's List student who has been elected to Phi Beta Kappa, has been accepted to the preeminent University of Luxembourg to pursue a master's degree in modern and contemporary European philosophy.

Ten Hofstra students were honored with a Phi Beta Kappa Book (PBK) Awards, sponsored by the Provost's office and the Hofstra University Bookstore. Every fall, Hofstra's Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, one of only 283 in the nation, honors a small number of promising sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have attained a 4.0 GPA while taking broad and rigorous coursework in the liberal arts and sciences.

Music education majors Andrea Stock '18 and Karen Fernandez '18 performed their vocal recital on Saturday, April 7, at Hofstra University's Helene Fortunoff Theater. Featured artists included percussionists Connor Martin '18 and Dylan Newshan '18, violinist Paula Chirinos '20, clarinetist Kyle Small '18 and pianist Violetta Zabbi.

Members of Hofstra's The Hofbeats placed first at the 2018 International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) Mid-Atlantic Quarterfinal and earned a spot in the Semi-finals.

Hofstra students Adrianna Kapusta and Alexander Burns performed a music recital on Sunday, April 8, at The Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center. They performed six classical recital pieces for the violin and double bass. Composers featured in the program included Mozart, Mendelssohn, Bottesini and Koussevitzky.

Eleven computer science and engineering students from Hofstra University attended the 2018 USENIX Enigma Conference and Facebook's University Cybersec Partnership Day in California last month, thanks to scholarships from Facebook. The trip provided students with the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and security researchers about emerging threats and defenses in cybersecurity.

Two computer science students have been awarded travel scholarships from Facebook to attend the 5th Annual Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) conference in Chicago this spring.

Eleven Hofstra engineering students helped build a pavilion on Governor's Island that took first place in the 7th Annual City of Dreams Pavilion competition. The annual competition, sponsored by FIGMENT, a free arts event, the AIANY Emerging New York Architects Committee, and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY), encourages sustainable design by challenging architects, designers, and engineers to envision and create architecture out of materials that will have as little impact on the environment as possible.
