Firestone Fellowships Awarded

Two students in Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (HCLAS) have been awarded the 2024 Firestone Fellowship, an annual award that provides students with opportunities to conduct summer research in their academic discipline, with the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Laika Jerome, a political science major from North Baldwin, NY, has been awarded the prestigious and selective American Political Science Association's 2024 Ralph Bunche Summer Institute Program Scholarship. She is the third Hofstra recipient of the scholarship.

Esha Sharma '24, a student in the BS/MD program at Hofstra University, won a Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center Award at the New England Science Symposium (NESS) at Harvard Medical School for a presentation about her research on the causes of a common form of leukemia.

Hofstra Biochemistry Major Honored as a Goldwater Scholar

Antonio Collado '24, a biochemistry major at Hofstra University, has been honored as a Goldwater Scholar and recipient of the Chemers Neustein Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) from Rockefeller University. These highly selective awards recognize Collado's academic achievements and the research he has conducted at Hofstra on the structure and function of enzymes that are targeted by antibiotics.

Recipients of Hofstra's Inaba Scholarship Announced

The Global Studies and Geography Department has announced Leivys Garcia of Weehawken, NJ, and Nicholas Lucchetto of King County, WA, as the 2023-24 recipients of the Masaharu G. Inaba Endowed Memorial Scholarship. Donated by the Inaba family in memory of the late Dr. George Inaba, who taught geography at Hofstra from 1959-1983, this scholarship is awarded annually to Global Studies or Geography majors.

Fulbright Sends Hofstra Graduate to Bosnia for Teaching Assistantship

The Bosnian Embassy, in conjunction with the Fulbright Program, has awarded Margaret Engel '21 a United States English Teaching Assistantship (USTA) in Bosnia and Herzegovina for nine months in 2022-2023. This Fulbright Award is the fourth Hofstra has received this year. Earlier this spring two graduate students - Harrison McKeeman '21 and Faigy Mandelbaum - and Professor Aashish Kumar were announced as recipients.

Senior Awarded a United States Teaching Assistantship in Austria

The Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, in conjunction with the Fulbright Program, has awarded senior Katherine Dickenson '21 a United States Teaching Assistantship (USTA) in Austria for 10 months in 2021-2022. The Lockport, NY, native, will teach English language at an agricultural high school near Klagenfurt, Austria.

Senior Awarded Fulbright Grant

Allie Richardson '20 has been awarded a Fulbright Study/Research Grant to conduct research on late medieval Germany at the University of Trier in 2021. Richardson, who lives in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA, has a dual major in history and German. "The Fulbright experience will surely be a transformative moment in Allie's life and future career," says Professor of History Simon Doubleday, who has advised Richardson's research on the social and political struggles of 13th century Strasbourg. "She is an exceptionally accomplished, self-motivated, and articulate student, with excellent language skills in modern German. She has been able to put these skills to good use in her research, while also wrestling with the unique challenges of reading original medieval texts in Middle High German."

Chemistry Major Becomes Hofstra's First Goldwater Scholar

Joseph Mancuso, a junior biochemistry major, has been named Hofstra University's first Goldwater Scholar. Considered the preeminent award for undergraduate students studying the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics, this year's 396 Goldwater Scholars were selected from over 5,000 sophomores and juniors nominated nationwide.

Nominated by their chairpersons and professors, the student honorees received a certificate and a $100 gift.

Hofstra University and the Department of Athletics are excited to announce the creation of the Hofstra Athletic Director Scholars Academic Honor Roll, recognizing the incredible work of Pride student-athletes in the classroom. This list acknowledges the outstanding achievement of Hofstra undergraduate student-athletes who have successfully completed at least 12 credits with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 for the spring 2019 semester.

Seniors from 23 departments and a variety of interdisciplinary programs were recognized for outstanding achievement Academic Excellence Awards presented by Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (HCLAS. Nominated by their chairpersons and professors, 35 of the 42 student honorees were present to receive their award, which included a certificate and a $100 gift. After the ceremony in the Student Center Theater, the celebration moved to the Multipurpose Room.

The spectacular work of the Hofstra student-athletes in the classroom continued during the spring semester as not only did the group of more than 300 Pride athletes compile a school-record 3.27 grade point average but 116 of them were named to either the Provost's or Dean's List for their extraordinary work.

Four members of the Hofstra University Women's Golf Team were named to the Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team. The four are part of 830 women's golfers from around the country who earned the distinction, which requires a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade point average.
