Hale Family Scholarship Awarded to Health Sciences Student

The Hale Family Annual Scholarship, established in 2018 and renewed in 2022 by Hofstra alumnus Charles R. Hale '71, continues to support Hofstra graduate students pursuing a specialized Certificate in Alcohol and Substance Abuse. The scholarship, which awards $5,000 every semester for up to five semesters, reflects Hale's commitment to addressing the nation's opioid crisis. This year's scholarship recipient, Cynthia Escobar, a mental health counseling graduate student in the School of Health Sciences from Hempstead, NY, connects with the scholarship's mission.

DaSilva Scholarship Awarded to Alum with Stellar Record

Bianca Nicole Saraniero '19 is the recipient of the 2019 Albert I. DaSilva Memorial Endowed Scholarship for maintaining a perfect grade point average of 4.0 throughout her studies at Hofstra. Earlier this year, Saraniero, who majored in biology, was honored as Outstanding Senior Scholar at Hofstra University's Celebration of Scholarly Excellence during commencement weekend. She is currently a graduate student at Hofstra, pursuing an MS Ed in Biology Education. She plans to be a New York state secondary education biology and chemistry teacher.

Jessica Kurtz Awarded a U.S. Dept. of State Critical Language Scholarship

Jessica Kurtz, a junior at Hofstra University, has been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship to study Swahili in Arusha, Tanzania, in eastern Africa from June 7 to August 8, 2018. She is from Boyertown, PA, and has double majors in English and education and a minor in speech-language-hearing sciences. The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program is part of a government effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages. CLS scholars gain language and cultural skills that enable them to contribute to U.S. economic competitiveness and national security.

Sidney Madden, a senior journalism student at Hofstra University, has been named a 2013/14 Ailes Rising Apprentice, winning a $10,000 scholarship and a paid summer internship with FOX News Channel. The Ailes Rising Apprentice Program identifies and nurtures promising minority journalists at the college level, and was created by FOX News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes.

Biochem Student Wins National Scholarship for Scientific Research

Hofstra University student Beena Biju '15 spent the summer conducting scientific research at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as a 2013 Amgen scholar. The national Amgen Scholars Program allows undergraduates to participate in important research projects and conduct hands-on laboratory work, under the mentorship of scientists at 13 leading institutions in the U.S. and Europe. Biju was one of 255 U.S. students selected among 3,640 applicants nationwide.
