Phi Beta Kappa Book Awards

Eleven students were named recipients of the 2019 Phi Beta Kappa Book (PBK) Awards, sponsored by the Provost's office and the Hofstra University Bookstore. Every fall, Hofstra's Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, one of only 286 in the nation, honors a small number of promising sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have attained a 4.0 GPA while taking a broad and rigorous coursework in the liberal arts and sciences.

Great Neck Student Competes in Japanese Language Competition

Rishab Bhatnagar, a senior majoring in Japanese and pre-health studies, was one of nine students from around the country to advance to the finals of the recent J.LIVE Talk competition at George Washington University in Washington, DC. J.LIVE - Japanese Learning Inspired Vision and Engagement - is a national college-level language speech competition that emphasizes a comprehensive range of communication skills. Bhatnagar gave a presentation similar to a TED talk on cultural appropriation as it pertains to kimonos, and under what circumstances it is appropriate public attire for people outside of Japanese society.

Student's Central Asian Studies Wins Competitive Scholarship

Gurkamal Dadra '21, an anthropology major from Bellmore, NY, is one of 844 American undergraduate students from 335 colleges and universities across the United States selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study or intern abroad during the spring of 2019. The Congressionally-funded scholarship will allow Dadra to study in Kyrgyzstan through a University of Montana program during the summer of 2019.

Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Transformative Learning Grant

Five students, representing the arts, social sciences and the natural sciences, are the inaugural recipients of the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Transformative Learning Grant. The financial support that these students receive will subsidize the expense of research projects, commuting to New York City for internships and community service experiences, and the cost of study abroad programs.

Liberal Arts & Science Students Recognized for Excellence

Seniors from 23 departments and a variety of interdisciplinary programs were recognized for outstanding achievement Academic Excellence Awards presented by Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (HCLAS. Nominated by their chairpersons and professors, 35 of the 42 student honorees were present to receive their award, which included a certificate and a $100 gift. After the ceremony in the Student Center Theater, the celebration moved to the Multipurpose Room.

Students Win Coding Competition

Two Hofstra University computer science students were on a team that took first place in the JPMorgan Chase Code for Good competition hosted in Tampa, Florida this month. The competition is an opportunity for students to work in teams alongside JP Morgan's coders to solve a technical challenge faced by one of two non-profit clients at the event.

Jessica Kurtz Awarded a U.S. Dept. of State Critical Language Scholarship

Jessica Kurtz, a junior at Hofstra University, has been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship to study Swahili in Arusha, Tanzania, in eastern Africa from June 7 to August 8, 2018. She is from Boyertown, PA, and has double majors in English and education and a minor in speech-language-hearing sciences. The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program is part of a government effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages. CLS scholars gain language and cultural skills that enable them to contribute to U.S. economic competitiveness and national security.
