Chemistry Award Winners

Hofstra University's Chemistry Department, chaired by Dr. Sabrina Sobel, held its 2014 Alumni & Awards Banquet on May 8 at the University Club. This annual dinner brings together students, faculty and graduates of the program. Students were recognized by the department for academic excellence, and new board members for CSI Hofstra and the student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

The recipients were chosen by professors on the basis of academic standing as well as demonstrated drive, leadership, and commitment through internships, extra-curricular activities, and community involvement.

2014 Fine Arts Student Art Show

Hofstra's Department of Fine Arts, Design, Art History presented its annual Student Art Show April 30-May 12, 2014. The show featured hundreds of pieces of the finest artwork created by Hofstra students in painting, drawing, 3D, photography, design and new media. During the opening reception for the art show, awards were given to students for outstanding art in a variety of genres.

Hollins University Lex Allen Literary Festival Finalists

Two Hofstra students, Laina Briedis and Julia McGuire, are finalists for awards in creative writing by the Hollins University Lex Allen Literary Festival in Roanoke, VA. The festival, an annual event since 1960, takes place this year on April 5. Both Laina and Julia are dual majors in elementary education and English, with a concentration in creative writing.

More than 540 students from high schools and middle schools in Queens and Long Island competed in the 34th Annual Long Island Regional History Day contest at Hofstra University on March 9, 2014. History Day is a national, year-long educational program that encourages students to explore local, state and national history through documentaries, exhibits, papers and performances.

Hofstra University Senior Sidney Madden Wins National FOX News Scholarship

Sidney Madden, a senior journalism student at Hofstra University, has been named a 2013/14 Ailes Rising Apprentice, winning a $10,000 scholarship and a paid summer internship with FOX News Channel. The Ailes Rising Apprentice Program identifies and nurtures promising minority journalists at the college level, and was created by FOX News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes.

Hofstra University senior Claudia Balthazar has been selected to participate in the national News21 program, a prestigious investigative journalism fellowship from the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education. She and other top student journalists from across the country will report on gun legislation and rights this year.

Student Crew on Pride Productions Broadcasts

Hofstra University's new Pride Productions unit produces live online broadcasts of Hofstra events, including NCAA Division I athletics. The team is made up primarily of Hofstra University students who act as directors, technical directors, camera crew and graphics and replay operators, getting hands-on experience with state-of-the-art professional broadcast systems.

Marketing Class Wins Honorable Mention in International Case Competition

A team of Hofstra students earned an honorable mention in the 2013-14 American Marketing Association's International Collegiate Case Competition. The AMA Case Competition is a yearlong event that brings together top marketing students to work on a marketing challenge submitted by a sponsoring organization. This year, students were asked to develop a marketing strategy for Hershey Company's Take 5 candy bar.
