Esha Sharma '24, a student in the BS/MD program at Hofstra University, won a Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center Award at the New England Science Symposium (NESS) at Harvard Medical School for a presentation about her research on the causes of a common form of leukemia.

Antonio Collado '24, a biochemistry major at Hofstra University, has been honored as a Goldwater Scholar and recipient of the Chemers Neustein Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) from Rockefeller University. These highly selective awards recognize Collado's academic achievements and the research he has conducted at Hofstra on the structure and function of enzymes that are targeted by antibiotics.

The society celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. The Global Studies and Geography Department has announced Leivys Garcia of Weehawken, NJ, and Nicholas Lucchetto of King County, WA, as the 2023-24 recipients of the Masaharu G. Inaba Endowed Memorial Scholarship. Donated by the Inaba family in memory of the late Dr. George Inaba, who taught geography at Hofstra from 1959-1983, this scholarship is awarded annually to Global Studies or Geography majors.

Hofstra student Maxwell Clegg '23 of Arlington, VA, will be examining the economic, political, technological, and transnational issues shaping Africa's future as a research assistant at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a prestigious international think tank.

Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has awarded five students Transformative Learning Grants to defray the cost of their study abroad experiences this winter and spring 2023.

"Punishment for the Failed Criminal," a paper by philosophy major Evan Lopes '23, has been published in the undergraduate philosophy journal Ephermeris. In the piece, Lopes analyzes the similarities and differences between successful criminal acts and attempted but failed criminal acts. The measure of punishment for each should be the same, he argues. Whether or not there was resulting harm is incidental.

The writing talents of two Hofstra students were recently honored with the Dana Brand Prize, an award named for a popular English professor who passed away in 2011. May 2022 graduate Zachary Parrish received the award for "The Consequences of Denialistic Responses to Atrocity," an essay of literary criticism. Katherine Choma '23 is the prize's first recipient for a work of creative nonfiction: "The Things They Will Tell You/The Things I Wish I Said."

The Bosnian Embassy, in conjunction with the Fulbright Program, has awarded Margaret Engel '21 a United States English Teaching Assistantship (USTA) in Bosnia and Herzegovina for nine months in 2022-2023. This Fulbright Award is the fourth Hofstra has received this year. Earlier this spring two graduate students - Harrison McKeeman '21 and Faigy Mandelbaum - and Professor Aashish Kumar were announced as recipients.

The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication showcased a record 70 films at the 25th Hofstra University Student Film Festival last week. The annual year-end event, which spanned three days, included 26 thesis films as well as documentary, experimental, intermediate, and advanced films.

Two students from The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication won top honors in the William Randolph Hearst Foundation's 2021-2022 Journalism Awards Program for stories they reported and produced for WRHU-Radio Hofstra University. Yaw Bonsu '24 and Rachel Luscher '23 placed in the Top-10 in the Audio News and Features competition, each submitting two pieces. Bonsu earned ninth place for his reporting on Joel Caston, the first incarcerated person to win an elected office in Washington, D.C., as well as a story on Nassau Haven, an emergency shelter for youth in Mineola. Luscher took tenth place for her report on the effect of increased screen time due to virtual learning on eye health, and as a feature story on Canine Companions, the service dog industry leader out of Medford.
