Hofstra University was a big winner at the Press Club of Long Island (PCLI) Media Awards Banquet and 50th Anniversary Celebration, taking home 18 first place, nine second place, and three third place awards. The honors recognized students, faculty, and staff.

Victoria Bowman, a nursing student at the Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies, from Massapequa Park, NY, embarked on a transformative journey for her summer break - volunteering with Kenya Connect, an organization dedicated to educational empowerment and community development. For Bowman, this summer trip was more than just a volunteer opportunity; it was a culmination of lifelong values instilled by her family and enriched by her academic journey at Hofstra.

Hofstra University was honored for excellence in audio, print and digital news reporting at the annual Folio Awards, recently presented by the Fair Media Council (FMC) at the Garden City Hotel. Hofstra won a total of five awards, four of which were in student-produced categories.

More than 1,700 Hofstra University students earned their undergraduate, graduate, or law degrees in spring 2024.

Hofstra University congratulates the students named to the spring 2024 Dean's List for their outstanding academic achievement. Students must earn a grade point average of at least 3.5 during the semester to make the Dean's List.

Hofstra University is proud to release the spring 2024 Provost's List, which recognizes students who earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

In fall 2022, Hofstra engineering students from the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science, along with volunteers from Grimshaw Architects and sbp (schlaich bergermann partner), constructed a 24-foot-wide kaleidoscope structure of acrylic, stone, and plywood behind Bernon Hall on South Campus. The structure, titled [re] fractal, has been revived and is now in its second installation at the Queens Botanical Garden. The urban oasis was a perfect fit for the second installation of [re] fractal, and itsrainbow-like colors, as it coincides with the location's Pride Month celebrations. With the assistance of 10 Hofstra engineering and honors college students, Dr. Segal installed [re] fractal at the Garden.

The Global Studies and Geography Department has announced Genevieve McCormick '25 of Allendale, NJ, as the 2024-2025 recipient of the Dr. Masaharu G. Inaba Endowed Memorial Scholarship.

The Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (HCLAS) has awarded 10 students a Transformative Learning Grant (TLG). HCLAS Dean Eva Badowska explained that the TLGs are presented to students who have committed to an experiential learning program during a semester or an intercession. Students selected for the grant must have at least one major in HCLAS and a demonstrated financial need. The grants are made possible by the generosity of Hofstra donors.

A group of nearly 50 graduates from the Hofstra Class of 2024 were honored during Commencement Weekend at the Grads of Color graduation celebration event. The celebration recognized the efforts of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) students. During the event, the graduates were given their graduation cord to showcase pride in their backgrounds when walking across the stage at Commencement.

Nearly 100 Hofstra first-generation graduates from the Class of 2024 were recognized during Commencement Weekend at the First-Gen Graduation Celebration. The celebration served as an opportunity to honor the unique accomplishment of overcoming barriers facing first-generation students and brought together the Hofstra community to congratulate the graduates on their achievements. The event included powerful student stories, and the room was filled with emotions as the graduates recieved their cord while their names were read.

Hofstra students displayed research and independent study projects on topics ranging from antibiotic resistance to the impact of social media influencers as part of Spring Graduate Research Day.

Over 140 undergraduate students presented their research at Hofstra's annual Undergraduate Research Day, last month. The research projects were showcased in multiple formats including posters, art displays and performances and focused on varied academic disciplines, including humanities; communications; education; engineering; computer science; and the natural, health, and social sciences.

The Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies celebrated 49 graduate nursing and perfusionist students with a special convocation ceremony yesterday. With their families and friends in attendance, as well as the University's faculty and administration, the graduates processed into Adams Playhouse with pride to celebrate this momentous occasion in their academic careers.

Two students in Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (HCLAS) have been awarded the 2024 Firestone Fellowship, an annual award that provides students with opportunities to conduct summer research in their academic discipline, with the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Laika Jerome, a political science major from North Baldwin, NY, has been awarded the prestigious and selective American Political Science Association's 2024 Ralph Bunche Summer Institute Program Scholarship. She is the third Hofstra recipient of the scholarship.

Madison Garraffo '24, a senior music education major at Hofstra, has been honored with the Collegiate Professional Achievement Award from the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Additionally, Hofstra's undergraduate chapter of NAfME was selected as the recipient of the organization's Chapter of Excellence Award, in the category of service.

Hofstra University inducted 36 students into its chapter of Phi Beta Kappa this spring. Phi Beta Kappa is considered an emblem of high achievement and strong potential. The society celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Its campus chapters invite for induction the most outstanding arts and sciences students at America's leading colleges and universities.

Over 30 graduate students in the Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies' Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) program celebrated a milestone in their nursing journey as they commemorated the transition from classwork to clinical practice at a recent White Coat Ceremony.

Over a dozen students graduating in May 2024 attended the Umoja Scholars LLC Graduation Celebration on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. Students from Black Leaders Advocating for Change (BLAC) were also honored at the event for their academic achievements. Hofstra President Susan Poser and Provost Charlie Riordan were among the many Hofstra administrator attendees.

A group of 12 Hofstra University students were inducted into the Mu Kappa Chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU), the international honor society for geography students.

Seventeen teams of seniors from the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science presented their capstone projects to a panel of judges at the Senior Project Showcase, closing out their final semester. The competition included projects ranging from earpiece design enhancement to a mobile app for textbook exchange to a rock, paper, scissors robot. Nineteen industry judges scored projects on a rubric, which included problem relevance, solution methodology, originality, and quality of presentation. Projects were grouped into two categories, computer science and engineering.

In October 2023, 34 students from the inaugural class of undergraduate nurses from the Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies began their clinical journey. As they wrap up their experience and prepare for their final year of undergraduate studies while making Hofstra history, they shared their reflections.

Fourteen cheer and dance students from Hofstra got to celebrate "decision day" live on NBC's Today Show. In a special segment on May 1, Hauppauge High School senior Jenny Dove revealed to her family, friends, and the national audience that she chose Hofstra University as her future alma mater. To celebrate, the Hofstra cheer squad exploded onto the NBC plaza to welcome Jenny to the Hofstra Pride.

Seven Hofstra students participated in the Model European Union (EU), sponsored by State University of New York's (SUNY) Institute for European Studies. Founded in 1988 by SUNY, the Model EU simulates policymaking at the ministerial and head of government levels within the European Union. The event, held at SUNY Buffalo State University, April 12-14, allowed the students to learn about and develop skills in diplomacy and governance. Fifteen universities participated in the event, including universities from Canada, across New York State, and as far as Tennessee.

Hofstra's School of Health Professions and Human Services conducted a poverty simulation event in which students were assigned roles and scenarios - gender, age, family roles, employment, and housing status - and were required to manage their finances and make ends meet for a fictional four-week period. Nearly 70 students particpated from graduate programs including Audiology, Occupational Therapy, Health Administration, and Health Informatics.

IDEALS (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Leadership, Access, and Success) is a program funded by a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant that addresses the social determinants of education to increase the diversity of the nursing workforce. It consists of several initiatives, including a mentorship program, pipeline program, poverty simulation, student success programs, and faculty development. Student receipients of the Outstanding Engagement Award have gone above and beyond in their engagement and assistance with the IDEALS program.

Hofstra University student organizations, student leaders, and professional staff partners were honored with 2024 Student Leadership Awards for their efforts to positively impact the campus community. The awards were held on April 25 at the Multipurpose Room in the Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center.

Students in Hofstra University's Lawrence Herbert School of Communication have been accepted into the AmPav Worldwide Student Program at the 77th Annual Cannes International Film Festival, May 12-26, 2024.
