More than 2,000 high-achieving students have been named to the Hofstra University Dean's List for Fall 2013. Students who began their studies before Fall 2012 must earn at least a 3.4 grade point average to qualify. Those who entered the university after Fall 2012 must earn a grade point average of 3.5. Nine Hofstra students from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences were honored on October 30, 2013, at the Fall 2013 Phi Beta Kappa Book (PBK) Awards. The students - three sophomores, three juniors and three seniors - were selected by the Hofstra faculty PBK officers for maintaining a GPA of 3.9-4.0 and for high achievement in their major in the humanities, natural sciences or social sciences.

Hofstra University student Beena Biju '15 spent the summer conducting scientific research at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as a 2013 Amgen scholar. The national Amgen Scholars Program allows undergraduates to participate in important research projects and conduct hands-on laboratory work, under the mentorship of scientists at 13 leading institutions in the U.S. and Europe. Biju was one of 255 U.S. students selected among 3,640 applicants nationwide.

Megan Andrews, a junior finance and accounting major, was honored with the GEICO Achievement Award for academic success, leadership and service. The annual award, open to college sophomores and juniors majoring in business, computer science, mathematics and related fields, comes with a $1,000 scholarship.

Five students from the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University spent the summer mentoring aspiring filmmakers from Long Island and Queens high schools as part of the Documenting Diversity program. Documenting Diversity is an innovative initiative in which talented high school students pair up and examine their partner's culture through the art of documentary film-making, working under the guidance of Hofstra University student and faculty mentors.

More than 35 high-achieving first-year students have been named Dean's Business Scholars by the Frank G. Zarb School of Business. The program is designed to provide students with special opportunities to engage with faculty and industry executives to help them build their leadership skills.

Stefanie Kitsos '14, a speech pathology major, has been named the first Standout Student of the Fall 2013 semester at Hofstra University. Stefanie, who is hearing impaired, has decided to pursue a career helping others who have the same challenge. Standout Students are students whose achievements and accomplishments - academically, at an internship, or in extracurricular activities - set them apart.

The 2013 Hofstra Field Hockey team will begin its season on Friday, August 30 when it faces LaSalle at 11:30 a.m. at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.

Forty-six of Hofstra University's best students served as peer educators in the Spring 2013 semester, lecturing, tutoring, leading class discussions, and supervising student work for classes in their major department. Students must have at least a 3.5 GPA in their major and a recommendation from the faculty member to qualify for the prestigious peer teacher program.
