Hofstra University inducted 48 students into its chapter of Phi Beta Kappa this spring. Phi Beta Kappa is considered an emblem of high achievement and strong potential. The society celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Two Students Win National Journalism Award

Two students from The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication won top honors in the William Randolph Hearst Foundation's 2021-2022 Journalism Awards Program for stories they reported and produced for WRHU-Radio Hofstra University. Yaw Bonsu '24 and Rachel Luscher '23 placed in the Top-10 in the Audio News and Features competition, each submitting two pieces. Bonsu earned ninth place for his reporting on Joel Caston, the first incarcerated person to win an elected office in Washington, D.C., as well as a story on Nassau Haven, an emergency shelter for youth in Mineola. Luscher took tenth place for her report on the effect of increased screen time due to virtual learning on eye health, and as a feature story on Canine Companions, the service dog industry leader out of Medford.

First Recipients for Professors' Peace Fellowships

A recent alumnus with a passion for fighting the global human trafficking crisis and a junior who has mentored local high school students are the first recipients of Hofstra University's "Peace Fellowships." These awards were endowed in 2019 by longtime Hofstra professors and community activists Michael D'Innocenzo and Martin Melkonian. The hope of these faculty members was that the funds would give students the financial freedom to spend more time outside the classroom working on local and far-reaching community programs and projects.

Student Selected for Washington Center Seminar

Seven Hofstra University students have been selected to participate in the "Inside Washington" Seminar hosted by The Washington Center, January 2-10, 2022. The "Inside Washington" Seminar gives students the opportunity to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes in the nation's capital from political insiders, scholars and journalists. Last year's speakers included White House Communications Director Jen Psaski, former White House advisor Ron Christie, and former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele.

Hofstra TriBeta Chapter Inducts High Achieving Biology Majors

For the first time in more than a year, Hofstra biology majors gathered in person - albeit socially distant - to celebrate the induction of 24 students into Alpha Lamba, the university's chapter of Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta), the Biology Honor Society. The spring ceremony also included a virtual component for those students who have been studying remotely this academic year.

Hofstra Sweeps Top Spots in TriBeta Regional Convention

Hofstra University Biology majors Amber Jordan '21 and Julianna Dolinski '21 swept the top awards for their poster presentations at the Northeast-1 (NE-1) Regional District Convention of the TriBeta National Biology Honor Society hosted by Elmira College. The poster session consisted of 20 posters from 13 higher education institutions.

Senior Awarded a United States Teaching Assistantship in Austria

The Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, in conjunction with the Fulbright Program, has awarded senior Katherine Dickenson '21 a United States Teaching Assistantship (USTA) in Austria for 10 months in 2021-2022. The Lockport, NY, native, will teach English language at an agricultural high school near Klagenfurt, Austria.

Senior Awarded Fulbright Grant

Allie Richardson '20 has been awarded a Fulbright Study/Research Grant to conduct research on late medieval Germany at the University of Trier in 2021. Richardson, who lives in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA, has a dual major in history and German. "The Fulbright experience will surely be a transformative moment in Allie's life and future career," says Professor of History Simon Doubleday, who has advised Richardson's research on the social and political struggles of 13th century Strasbourg. "She is an exceptionally accomplished, self-motivated, and articulate student, with excellent language skills in modern German. She has been able to put these skills to good use in her research, while also wrestling with the unique challenges of reading original medieval texts in Middle High German."

Chemistry Major Becomes Hofstra's First Goldwater Scholar

Joseph Mancuso, a junior biochemistry major, has been named Hofstra University's first Goldwater Scholar. Considered the preeminent award for undergraduate students studying the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics, this year's 396 Goldwater Scholars were selected from over 5,000 sophomores and juniors nominated nationwide.

Undergraduate Student Scholarship from the New York State Dance Education Association

Hofstra University senior Amber Richetelli, a dance education major from Hamden, CT, was recently awarded the 2019 Undergraduate Student Scholarship from the New York State Dance Education Association. Richetelli was honored at the annual conference of the National Dance Education Organization in Miami, FL.

Seniors from 24 departments and several interdisciplinary programs were recognized for outstanding achievement at the second annual Academic Excellence Awards presented by Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (HCLAS) on October 15. Nominated by their chairpersons and professors, the student honorees received a certificate and a $100 gift.

Nidhi Gandhi, a tutor at the Hofstra Writing Center, was part of a small group of students from around the world to attend and present research at the Naylor Workshop for Undergraduate Research in Writing Studies. Gandhi, a junior from Floral Park, NY, has been researching student and faculty attitudes toward academic writing.

Ten students were named recipients of the Fall 2019 Phi Beta Kappa Book (PBK) Award, sponsored by the Provost's office and the Hofstra University Bookstore. Every fall, Hofstra's Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, one of only 286 in the nation, honors a small number of promising sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have attained a 4.0 GPA while taking a broad and rigorous coursework in the liberal arts and sciences.

WRHU 88.7 FM Radio Hofstra University Named 2019 College Station of the Year

Hofstra University's student-run station, WRHU 88.7 FM Radio Hofstra University, has won the National Association of Broadcasters' prestigious Marconi Award as the College Radio Station of the Year for 2019. It is the station's third Marconi honor since 2014. More than 250 student staffers work at WRHU, which has studios in the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication. Several student staffers were present at the awards ceremony in Dallas, Texas on Thursday, September 26 to accept the Marconi Award.

Hofstra-Digital Remedy Venture Challenge Winners Crowned

Three student entrepreneurs won top honors in the 2019 Hofstra-Digital Remedy Venture Challenge. The winning start-ups include a company that makes high-performance track spikes for female sprinters, the inventor of an organic eyebrow gel and a low-cost, accessible mobile platform to fight addiction. The contest, in its seventh year, awarded total prizes valued at $75,000 to help student entrepreneurs bankroll their start-ups. The Venture Challenge is sponsored by Digital Remedy, a digital marketing company, and run by Hofstra's Center for Entrepreneurship.

Four Students Win National Gracie Awards

Four students have won national Gracie Awards for excellence in news programming for their work on campus radio station WRHU 88.7 FM, part of the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication. The prestigious honor, given annually by the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation, recognizes work by, for, or about women in television, radio, and online media on the national, local, and student level.

Seniors from 23 departments and a variety of interdisciplinary programs were recognized for outstanding achievement Academic Excellence Awards presented by Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (HCLAS. Nominated by their chairpersons and professors, 35 of the 42 student honorees were present to receive their award, which included a certificate and a $100 gift. After the ceremony in the Student Center Theater, the celebration moved to the Multipurpose Room.

Students Win Coding Competition

Two Hofstra University computer science students were on a team that took first place in the JPMorgan Chase Code for Good competition hosted in Tampa, Florida this month. The competition is an opportunity for students to work in teams alongside JP Morgan's coders to solve a technical challenge faced by one of two non-profit clients at the event.
