Hofstra Students Explore Innovation and Careers in Silicon Valley

A group of students from the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of technology and innovation during a recent trip to Silicon Valley. Led by Associate Professor Jianchen Shan, the students engaged with some of the biggest names in the tech industry, gaining valuable insight into the latest advancements and career opportunities in computer science and cybersecurity.

Hofstra Students Shine at Sports Medicine Conference

Jessie Hirsch (Bellerose, NY) and Julia Catanzano (Deer Park, NY), students from Hofstra's School of Health Sciences (SHS), earned top honors at the Greater New York American College of Sports Medicine (GNY ACSM) Conference held at NYU Langone in New York City. The conference showcased research from undergraduate and graduate students across the region, featuring 29 accepted abstracts and six finalists in the prestigious President's Cup Student Research Competition. Additionally, SHS had three student poster presentations that included collaborative research conducted by undergraduate Exercise Physiology students including Admar Calovini (New Hyde Park, NY), Jasmine Garmon (Holbrook, NY), David Wang (Valley Stream, NY), Erin Crisley (Wakefield, MA), Paige Kyle (Aurora, CO), Tarek Harhash (East Northport, NY), Emma Brennan (Myrtle Beach, SC), Lily Yepez (N.Bellmore, NY), Stacey Wong (Middle Village, NY), Anaya Davis (Palm Bay, FL), Amelia Heywood (Roseville, CA), and Emily Kishori (Elmont, NY).

Hofstra PA Student inspires Hispanic Youth With New Children's Book

Juliana Feeney, a physician assistant (PA) studies student from Congers, NY, is on a mission to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals. Thanks to a grant from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Health Foundation, Feeney is working on a children's book titled El heroico asociado medico (The Hero Physician Associate). The book idea was designed to introduce the PA profession to Spanish-speaking, elementary-aged children in the Hempstead School District, with the aim of encouraging them to consider it as a future career.

Ceremony Marks Milestone Toward Graduate Degree for Nursing Students

Students from the Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies reached a milestone in their academic journeys toward the Doctor of Nursing Practice in Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. The White Coat Ceremony, attended by students' families and friends, marked the transition from classroom learning to clinical practice for the 54 students.

Welcome Week T-Shirt Contest Winner

This past spring, Hofstra announced an exciting opportunity for students - a contest to design a T-shirt that will be given to the incoming Class of 2028 during Welcome Week. The contest was open to all students, regardless of major or discipline, to showcase their creativity and represent the spirit of the University through original artwork, within the theme "What does Hofstra mean to me?" A panel of expert judges evaluated all 48 entries with the grand prize going to Pallavi Singh, an English major from South Richmond, NY, for her design titled "Fill your cup at HOFSTRA." In addition to having her design printed on the Welcome Week shirts, Singh was also provided with a $250 gift card to the campus bookstore.

DeMatteis Senior Project Showcase Competition

Seventeen teams of seniors from the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science presented their capstone projects to a panel of judges at the Senior Project Showcase, closing out their final semester. The competition included projects ranging from earpiece design enhancement to a mobile app for textbook exchange to a rock, paper, scissors robot. Nineteen industry judges scored projects on a rubric, which included problem relevance, solution methodology, originality, and quality of presentation. Projects were grouped into two categories, computer science and engineering.

Hofstra Cheer and Dance Students Appear Live on the Today Show

Fourteen cheer and dance students from Hofstra got to celebrate "decision day" live on NBC's Today Show. In a special segment on May 1, Hauppauge High School senior Jenny Dove revealed to her family, friends, and the national audience that she chose Hofstra University as her future alma mater. To celebrate, the Hofstra cheer squad exploded onto the NBC plaza to welcome Jenny to the Hofstra Pride.

Model Students Participate in Model EU

Seven Hofstra students participated in the Model European Union (EU), sponsored by State University of New York's (SUNY) Institute for European Studies. Founded in 1988 by SUNY, the Model EU simulates policymaking at the ministerial and head of government levels within the European Union. The event, held at SUNY Buffalo State University, April 12-14, allowed the students to learn about and develop skills in diplomacy and governance. Fifteen universities participated in the event, including universities from Canada, across New York State, and as far as Tennessee.

Hofstra Graduate Students Participate in Poverty Simulation

Hofstra's School of Health Professions and Human Services conducted a poverty simulation event in which students were assigned roles and scenarios - gender, age, family roles, employment, and housing status - and were required to manage their finances and make ends meet for a fictional four-week period. Nearly 70 students particpated from graduate programs including Audiology, Occupational Therapy, Health Administration, and Health Informatics.

The Hofstra-Digital Remedy Venture Challenge Series is an annual entrepreneurship competition administered by the Hofstra University Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship with total prizes valued at $75,500. It is made possible through the donation of Hofstra alumnus Mike Seiman, chairman and CEO of Digital Remedy, a member of Hofstra's Board of Trustees, and chair of the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Advisory Board. The Hofstra-Digital Remedy Venture Challenge Series is an annual entrepreneurship competition formed to inspire students to launch their own startups by leading them through the business model canvas and customer discovery process and assisting them with public speaking and presentation skills.

In a fizzy triumph of innovation and entrepreneurship, SirrPops Drop Pop, the brainchild of international business major Patrick Dagher and finance major Gregory Franzetti, clinched the top spot at the Hofstra University Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship's (IIE) annual Digital Remedy Venture Challenge. Hofstra University Students Win Big at 2024 Long Island Capture the Flag Competition

Students from the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science took home first and third place finishes at the 2024 LICTF capture the flag competition. The annual event, hosted by the Long Island chapter of the International Information System Security Certification Consortium (ISC2), features a series of challenges designed to test skills and knowledge of cybersecurity, including cryptology.
