Eight Hofstra students from Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences were honored at the 2014 Phi Beta Kappa Book (PBK) Awards. Each fall the Hofstra Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa selects a small number of promising sophomores, juniors, and seniors to honor at the Book Award Luncheon, which is sponsored by the Provost's office and the Hofstra University Bookstore. Honorees earn a high GPA while taking broad and rigorous coursework in the liberal arts and sciences.

Hofstra Freshman Ashunae Durant Wins CAA Weekly Awards

Hofstra sophomore Kelly Loftus was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 8.

Hofstra Junior Goalkeeper Patric Pray was named to the All-CAA Academic Team.

The Hofstra Women's Basketball team starts the 2014-15 season.

Students completed the Hofstra Career Center's LinkedIn Power Hour, during which the center helped students launch or update their LinkedIn profiles.

Computer science majors, senior Brian Blanco and sophomore Ashish Pandhi, won first place and $50,000 to develop their business, an advanced social media management platform, in the 2014 Hofstra-CPXi Venture Tech Challenge.

Senior Zoe Hoffmann,a triple major in public relations, global studies and geography, won the Council of Public Relations Firms' national video contest, which called for students to create a short video about their "dream PR assignment." Hoffmann's winning entry outlined her strategy to expand the reach of the non-profit organization Kiva.

The Hofstra Field Hockey team will begin the 2014 season on Friday, August 29 at the University at Albany. Game time is 1 p.m.

The Hofstra Men's Soccer team will start the 2014 season on Aug. 29 against Northern Illinois.

The 2014 Hofstra Women's Soccer team will begin its season on Friday, Aug. 22 when it faces UConn at 7 p.m.

The 2014 Hofstra Volleyball team will begin its season on Friday, August 29 when it faces St. Francis Brooklyn at 11:30 a.m. in the Mack Physical Education Center.

Through the newly-established Lister Summer Fellowships, three Hofstra University Honors College students were given the opportunity to stay on campus to work on individual research projects June-August under the mentorship of a Hofstra chemistry professor. The inaugural Lister Fellows are: Faith Fowler of Issaquah, WA; Amanda Stashin of Massapequa, NY and Edward Zhou of Poughkeepsie, NY.

Hofstra University's Chemistry Department, chaired by Dr. Sabrina Sobel, held its 2014 Alumni & Awards Banquet on May 8 at the University Club. This annual dinner brings together students, faculty and graduates of the program. Students were recognized by the department for academic excellence, and new board members for CSI Hofstra and the student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Students from the Hofstra University Class of 2014 presented their original senior research projects in subjects ranging from biology and drama to geology, film and business during the annual Undergraduate Research Day.

Eleven students from the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University have been named Students of the Year, with each one representing a different major within the school. The recipients were chosen by professors on the basis of academic standing as well as demonstrated drive, leadership, and commitment through internships, extra-curricular activities, and community involvement.

Hofstra sophomore outfielder Chloe Fitzgerald and junior pitcher Taylor Pirone earned weekly awards from the Colonial Athletic Association on April 14.

Two Hofstra students, Laina Briedis and Julia McGuire, are finalists for awards in creative writing by the Hollins University Lex Allen Literary Festival in Roanoke, VA. The festival, an annual event since 1960, takes place this year on April 5. Both Laina and Julia are dual majors in elementary education and English, with a concentration in creative writing.

More than 540 students from high schools and middle schools in Queens and Long Island competed in the 34th Annual Long Island Regional History Day contest at Hofstra University on March 9, 2014. History Day is a national, year-long educational program that encourages students to explore local, state and national history through documentaries, exhibits, papers and performances.

The 2014 Hofstra Baseball team began its season February 21 in Arizona. The Pride are scheduled to open their home campaign Wednesday, March 19 versus Fordham.

Hofstra sophomore third baseman Kim Smith was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Player of the Week on March 4.

Hofstra University's Cheer team took second place in the small coed Division I competition at the Universal Cheer Association's National Championship in Orlando, Florida.

More than 200 students from 15 schools around Long Island and New York City participated the highly selective 2014 Hofstra University Model United Nations Conference.

Hofstra University's Dance team took second place in the 2014 Universal Dance Association (UDA) National Championship in Orlando, Florida.

Seven students spent a day in the state Capitol in Albany, meeting with lawmakers and state officials to discuss the value of student aid programs and learn about the workings of state government as part of New York Student Aid Alliance Advocacy Day.

The 2014 Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team will start its season on Saturday, February 15 when it travels to New Hampshire. The Pride is coming off an 11-win season in 2013 and Hofstra advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title game.
