Variety magazine published a list of "110 Students to Watch" in its annual Education Impact Report, published April 28. Among those students were two from Hofstra University.

Elisa Tang, a student journalist at WRHU 88.7 FM Radio Hofstra University, has won the national Gracie Award for outstanding news programming from the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation.

Brianna Borresen, a graduate student in journalism, has won the national Gracie Award from the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation for her outstanding work at WRHU 88.7 FM Radio Hofstra University.

Eight Hofstra students from Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences were honored at the 2014 Phi Beta Kappa Book (PBK) Awards. Each fall the Hofstra Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa selects a small number of promising sophomores, juniors, and seniors to honor at the Book Award Luncheon, which is sponsored by the Provost's office and the Hofstra University Bookstore. Honorees earn a high GPA while taking broad and rigorous coursework in the liberal arts and sciences.

Computer science majors, sophomore Ashish Pandhi and senior Brian Blanco, won first place and $50,000 to develop their business, an advanced social media management platform, in the 2014 Hofstra-CPXi Venture Tech Challenge.

Senior Zoe Hoffmann,a triple major in public relations, global studies and geography, won the Council of Public Relations Firms' national video contest, which called for students to create a short video about their "dream PR assignment." Hoffmann's winning entry outlined her strategy to expand the reach of the non-profit organization Kiva.

Hofstra University's Chemistry Department, chaired by Dr. Sabrina Sobel, held its 2014 Alumni & Awards Banquet on May 8 at the University Club. This annual dinner brings together students, faculty and graduates of the program. Students were recognized by the department for academic excellence, and new board members for CSI Hofstra and the student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Through the newly-established Lister Summer Fellowships, three Hofstra University Honors College students were given the opportunity to stay on campus to work on individual research projects June-August under the mentorship of a Hofstra chemistry professor. The inaugural Lister Fellows are: Faith Fowler of Issaquah, WA; Amanda Stashin of Massapequa, NY and Edward Zhou of Poughkeepsie, NY.

Students from the Hofstra University Class of 2014 presented their original senior research projects in subjects ranging from biology and drama to geology, film and business during the annual Undergraduate Research Day.

Eleven students from the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University have been named Students of the Year, with each one representing a different major within the school. The recipients were chosen by professors on the basis of academic standing as well as demonstrated drive, leadership, and commitment through internships, extra-curricular activities, and community involvement.

Two Hofstra students, Laina Briedis and Julia McGuire, are finalists for awards in creative writing by the Hollins University Lex Allen Literary Festival in Roanoke, VA. The festival, an annual event since 1960, takes place this year on April 5. Both Laina and Julia are dual majors in elementary education and English, with a concentration in creative writing.

More than 540 students from high schools and middle schools in Queens and Long Island competed in the 34th Annual Long Island Regional History Day contest at Hofstra University on March 9, 2014. History Day is a national, year-long educational program that encourages students to explore local, state and national history through documentaries, exhibits, papers and performances.

Hofstra University's Cheer team took second place in the small coed Division I competition at the Universal Cheer Association's National Championship in Orlando, Florida.

Hofstra University senior Claudia Balthazar has been selected to participate in the national News21 program, a prestigious investigative journalism fellowship from the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education. She and other top student journalists from across the country will report on gun legislation and rights this year.

Hofstra University's new Pride Productions unit produces live online broadcasts of Hofstra events, including NCAA Division I athletics. The team is made up primarily of Hofstra University students who act as directors, technical directors, camera crew and graphics and replay operators, getting hands-on experience with state-of-the-art professional broadcast systems.

A team of Hofstra students earned an honorable mention in the 2013-14 American Marketing Association's International Collegiate Case Competition. The AMA Case Competition is a yearlong event that brings together top marketing students to work on a marketing challenge submitted by a sponsoring organization. This year, students were asked to develop a marketing strategy for Hershey Company's Take 5 candy bar.

Shannan Ferry, a senior broadcast journalism major, has won a $1,000 Presidents Scholarship from the Radio Television Digital News Association.

Five political science students will participate in a seminar in January 2014 on bi-partisan cooperation between Congress and the White House at The Washington Center.

Four teams of students from the Frank G. Zarb School of Business competed for seed money to fund their business proposals as part of the Capital One Bank Campus Entrepreneurship Challenge.

A team of two juniors from the Frank G. Zarb School of Business won first place in an annual entrepreneurship competition sponsored by Capital One Bank.

More than 35 high-achieving first-year students have been named Dean's Business Scholars by the Frank G. Zarb School of Business. The program is designed to provide students with special opportunities to engage with faculty and industry executives to help them build their leadership skills.

Stefanie Kitsos '14, a speech pathology major, has been named the first Standout Student of the Fall 2013 semester at Hofstra University. Stefanie, who is hearing impaired, has decided to pursue a career helping others who have the same challenge. Standout Students are students whose achievements and accomplishments - academically, at an internship, or in extracurricular activities - set them apart.

Forty-six of Hofstra University's best students served as peer educators in the Spring 2013 semester, lecturing, tutoring, leading class discussions, and supervising student work for classes in their major department. Students must have at least a 3.5 GPA in their major and a recommendation from the faculty member to qualify for the prestigious peer teacher program.
