Kestrel Bridges Wins Facebook Scholarship

2018 Mar 5

Kestrel Bridges attended the 2018 USENIX Enigma Conference and Facebook's University Cybersec Partnership Day in California last month, thanks to scholarships from Facebook. The trip provided eleven engineering and computer science students from Hofstra University the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and security researchers about emerging threats and defenses in cybersecurity.

The students were chosen by Facebook to attend the conference because they'd previously completed the Facebook and CodePath.org Cybersecurity Course offered by Hofstra's Computer Science Society last fall.

Dr. Angeliki Zavou, assistant professor of computer science, traveled with the students.

"The trip was an amazing opportunity for our students to hear from security experts about the current security challenges and their effort to provide secure online services," Dr. Zavou said. "They [students] were thrilled to get advice on how to better prepare for a career in cybersecurity."

During the first three days of the conference, students attended presentations by cybersecurity executives and university professors that addressed current issues in the industry. On day four, they traveled to Menlo Park, CA to Facebook headquarters where they met engineers from a variety of security groups who talked to students about their daily responsibilities at Facebook and about different cybersecurity career paths.
