Hofstra University Senior from Auburn Wins "All Our Energy" Art Contest

2017 Feb 13

Kelsey Kresge, a senior from Auburn, NH, majoring in rhetoric, has won first place in an art contest sponsored by the organization All Our Energy, in association with the Sierra Club. Kelsey, who created her design in Photoshop, titled her piece "Time to refocus our energy." It features a wind turbine in a cup of coffee.

"What I love about design is how you can say so much with so little. And because design is driven by visuals, connecting those little details when you see them is even more important," said Kelsey. "In the case of off shore wind power, it made a lot of sense to connect an innovative source of power to something as universal as a cup of coffee - something that millions of people associate with energy and necessity."

"Today's college students will not only help, they will be the driving force of the historic transition to a future of many possibilities and opportunities that off shore wind represents," said George Povall, director of All Our Energy. "It's time to 'refocus our energy,' and though we hadn't verbalized it, that message is exactly what we needed, and got from our contest winner."

Kelsey plans to complete a minor in fine arts before she graduates in May. This semester she is taking a course in "Visual Rhetoric" with Associate Professor Mary Anne Trasciatti.

Kelsey says "she has always been drawing," and she has long had an interest in how people communicate both through language and art, and how the two mediums relate to one another. Art, in particular, she says, "can be so simple, deliver an effective message and leave a lasting impression."

Another Hofstra student, Allison Wolf, a media studies major from Manalapan, NJ, was also honored as a runner-up for her work, "Source of Life".
